A bill which will be voted upon in the senate on Monday, November 28th, 2011 has the potential, if passed, to turn the U.S. into something more evil and oppressive than the USSR and Third Reich combined.

This bill is terrifying–and Senators Lindsey Graham, John McCain (Republican--Arizona), Carl Levin (Democrat--Michigan) and some other “leaders” are for it! In fact, McCain and Levin wrote the bill.
A U.S. citizen may be labelled a “Domestic Terrorist” and locked-up without trial, just for using cash, and participating in various other innocuous, American Activities.

“The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself,” writes Chris Anders of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office.

The ‘Worldwide Indefinite Detention without Charge or Trial’ provision of S.1867, also known as the National Defense Authorization Act, which shall be up for a vote in the Senate on Monday, Nov. 28th 2011, states that “the homeland is part of the battlefield,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (Republican--South Carolina)

Senator Udall and the ACLU are working to protect Americans from this proposed tyranny. If the bill is passed, there will be no Life, Liberty, and therefore you can forget about The Pursuit of Happiness in a formerly great, benevolent nation.

What I am about to tell you is something you’ve probably never heard or will ever

read in history books.

I believe that I am an eyewitness to history. I cannot tell you that

Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history. We elected

him by a landslide – 98% of the vote. I’ve never read that in any American publications.

Everyone thinks that Hitler just rolled in with his tanks and took

Austria by force. In 1938, Austria was in deep Depression. Nearly one-third

of our workforce was unemployed.

We had 25% inflation and 25% bank loan interest rates.

Farmers and business people were declaring bankruptcy daily. Young

people were going from house to house begging for food. Not that they didn’t

want to work; there simply weren’t any jobs. My mother was a Christian

woman and believed in helping people in need. Every day we cooked a big kettle

of soup and baked bread to feed those poor, hungry people – about 30 daily.

The Communist Party and the National Socialist Party were fighting

each other. Blocks and blocks of cities like Vienna , Linz , and Graz were

destroyed. The people became desperate and petitioned the government

to let them decide what kind of government they wanted.

We looked to our neighbor on the north, Germany, where Hitler had

been in power since 1933. We had been told that they didn’t have
unemployment or crime, and they had a high standard of living.

Nothing was ever said about persecution of any group — Jewish or otherwise.

We were led to believe that everyone was happy. We wanted the same way of life in Austria.

We were promised that a vote for Hitler would mean the end of unemployment and help for the family.

Hitler also said that businesses would be assisted, and farmers would get their farms back.

Ninety-eight percent of the population voted to annex Austria to

Germany and have Hitler for our ruler. We were overjoyed, and for
three days we danced in the streets and had candlelight parades.

The new government opened up big field kitchens and everyone was fed.

After the election, German officials were appointed, and like a

miracle, we suddenly had law and order. Three or four weeks later,
everyone was employed.

The government made sure that a lot of work was created through the Public Work Service.

Hitler decided we should have equal rights for women.

Before this, it was a custom that married Austrian women did not work outside the home.

An able-bodied husband would be looked down on if he couldn’t support his

family. Many women in the teaching profession were elated that theycould retain
the jobs they previously had been required to give up for marriage.

Hitler Targets Education – Eliminates Religious Instruction for
Children

Our education was nationalized. I attended a very good public school.

The population was predominantly Catholic, so we had religion in our

schools.

The day we elected Hitler (March 13, 1938), I walked into my

schoolroom to find the crucifix replaced by Hitler’s picture hanging next to a Nazi

flag. Our teacher, a very devout woman, stood up and told the class we

wouldn’t pray or have religion anymore. Instead, we sang “Deutschland,

Deutschland, Uber Alles,” and had physical education.

Sunday became National Youth Day with compulsory attendance. Parents

were not pleased about the sudden change in curriculum. They were told

that if they did not send us, they would receive a stiff letter of warning the

first time. The second time they would be fined the equivalent of

$300, and the third time they would be subject to jail. The first two hours

consisted of political indoctrination. The rest of the day we had sports. As

time went along, we loved it. Oh, we had so much fun and got our sports

equipment free. We would go home and gleefully tell our parents about

the wonderful time we had.

My mother was very unhappy. When the next term started, she took me

out of public school and put me in a convent. I told her she couldn’t do

that and she told me that someday when I grew up, I would be grateful. There

was a very good curriculum, but hardly any fun – no sports, and no political

indoctrination. I hated it at first but felt I could tolerate it.

Every once in a while, on holidays, I went home. I would go back to my
old friends, and ask what was going on and what they were doing. Their

loose lifestyle was very alarming to me. They lived without religion. By

that time unwed mothers were glorified for “having a baby for Hitler”.

It seemed strange to me that our society changed so suddenly.

As time went along, I realized what a great deed my mother did so that I

wasn’t exposed to that kind of humanistic philosophy.

“Equal Rights” Hits Home the Hard Way

In 1939, the war started and a food bank was established. All food was

rationed and could only be purchased using food stamps. At the same

time, a full-employment law was passed which meant if you didn’t work, you

didn’t get a ration card, and if you didn’t have a card, you starved to

death. Women who stayed home to raise their families didn’t have any

marketable skills and often had to take jobs more suited for men.

Soon after this, the draft was implemented. It was compulsory for

young people, male and female, to give one year to the labor corps.

During the day, the girls worked on the farms, and at night they returned

to their barracks for military training just like the boys.

They were trained to be anti-aircraft gunners and participated in the signal corps.

After the labor corps, they were not discharged but were used in the front lines.

When I go back to Austria to visit my family and friends,

most of these women are emotional cripples because they just

were not equipped to handle the horrors of combat.

Three months before I turned 18, I was in an air raid attack.

I nearly had a leg amputated, so I was spared having to go into

the labor corps and into military service.

Hitler Restructured the Family through Daycare

When the mothers had to go out into the work force, the government

immediately established child care centers. You could take your

children ages 4 weeks to school age and leave them there around-the-clock, 7

days a week, under the total care of the government. The state raised a whole

generation of children. There were no motherly women to take care of

the children, just people highly trained in child psychology. By this

time, no one talked about equal rights. We knew we’d been had.

Health-Care and Small Business Suffer under Government Controls

Before Hitler, we had very good medical care. Many American doctors

trained at the University of Vienna. After Hitler, health care was

socialized, free for everyone. Doctors were salaried by the government.
The problem was, since it was free, the people were going to the doctors for

everything. When the good doctor arrived at his office at 8 a.m., 40 people were

already waiting and, at the same time, the hospitals were full. If you

needed elective surgery, you had to wait a year or two for your turn.

There was no money for research as it was poured into socialized medicine.

Research at the medical schools literally stopped, so the best

doctors left Austria and emigrated to other countries.

As for health-care, our tax rates went up to 80% of our income.

Newlyweds immediately received a $1,000 loan from the government to
establish a household. We had big programs for families. All day care and
education were free. High schools were taken over by the government and
college tuition was subsidized.

Everyone was entitled to free handouts, such as food stamps,

clothing, and housing. We had another agency designed to monitor business.
My brother-in-law owned a restaurant that had square tables. Government

officials told him he had to replace them with round tables because

people might bump themselves on the corners. Then they said he had to have

additional bathroom facilities. It was just a small dairy business

with a snack bar. He couldn’t meet all the demands. Soon, he went out of

business. If the government owned the large businesses and not many small ones

existed, it could be in control.

We had consumer protection. We were told how to shop and what to buy.

Free enterprise was essentially abolished. We had a planning agency

specially designed for farmers. The agents would go to the farms, count the

live-stock, then tell the farmers what to produce, and how to produce

it.

“Mercy Killing” Redefined

In 1944, I was a student teacher in a small village in the Alps . The

villagers were surrounded by mountain passes which, in the winter,

were closed off with snow, causing people to be isolated. So people

inter-married and offspring were sometimes retarded. When I arrived,
I was told that there were 15 mentally retarded adults, but they were all
useful and did good manual work. I knew one, named Vincent, very well.
He was a janitor of the school. One day I looked out the window and saw
Vincent and others getting into a van. I asked my superior where they
were going. She said to an institution where the State Health Department
would teach them a trade, and to read and write. The families were
required to sign papers with a little clause that they could not
visit for 6 months. They were told that visits would interfere with the
program, and might cause homesickness.

As time passed, letters started to dribble back saying these people

died a natural, merciful death. The villagers were not fooled. We suspected

what was happening. Those people left in excellent physical health and all

died within 6 months. We called this euthanasia.

The Final Steps: Gun Laws

Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns.

Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by

matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law abiding and

dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms.

Not long after-wards, the police said that it was best for everyone to

turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them, so it was

futile not to comply voluntarily.

No more freedom of speech. Anyone who said something against the

government was taken away. We knew many people who were arrested,

not only Jews,but also priests and ministers who spoke up.

Totalitarianism didn’t come quickly; it took 5 years from 1938 until

1943, to realize full dictatorship in Austria. Had it happened overnight, my

countrymen would have fought to the last breath. Instead, we had

creeping gradualism. Now, our only weapons were broom handles.
The whole ideasounds almost unbelievable–that the state, little by little,
eroded our freedom.

After World War II, Russian troops occupied Austria. Women were raped,

preteen to elderly. The press never wrote about this either. When the

Soviets left in 1955, they took everything that they could,

dismantling whole factories in the process. They sawed down whole
orchards of fruit,and what they couldn’t destroy, they burned.
We called it The Burned Earth.

Most of the population barricaded themselves in their houses. Women

hid in their cellars for 6 weeks as the troops mobilized. Those who

couldn’t, paid the price. There is a monument in Vienna today,

dedicated to those women who were massacred by the Russians.

This is an eye-witness account. It’s true…those of us who sailed

past the Statue of Liberty came to a country of unbelievable freedom
and opportunity. America truly is the greatest country in the world.

Don’t let freedom slip away, because after America , there is no place to go.

Despite being many shades lighter than Mr. Cain, Belafonte, the embodiment of bitter hatred, called him a "false negro". I think an apt description of Mr. Belafonte would be, "False Liberal".

Those of us who have truly been paying attention can see the absurdity and utter hypocrisy of a president and Democrat-led senate, insisting that congressional Republicans, who voted against the current administration's record-breaking spending (and who warned of the disastrous results of the idiotic fake "stimulus bill" which did nothing but pay out trillions of unfunded dollars to special left-wing interests as well as to unions who would vote for him, and which didn't create jobs), fix the mess that they did not create! The proposed "cuts" amount to peanuts, and still give the profligate president a blank check for more trillions throughout the rest of his term. How can a man who is responsible for the most spending by one president in history ask others to clean up his enormous debt with a straight face? And these demands are executed in the most bullying, uncivil, petulant manner, despite his having called for "civility" a year ago. The previous president left office with a deficit, but the current one put us trillions into debt within the first three months of his term, apparently employing the misguided theory that "two wrongs make a right." He also has three million public employees, many of whom he appointed unilaterally, which means three million automatic votes for his re-election. And the country will be downgraded no matter what "deal" is arrived at this week. Thanks to the biggest-spending administration in history, by any yardstick one prefers to use. All the hot air about "shared sacrifice " rings hollow, when coming from a man who has spent the U.S. into infamy, who golfs and throws lavish parties with alarming frequency while he engages his country in THREE WARS, and whose wife takes luxury-trips with her giant entourage, which cost the American people mega-millions. G.W. Bush did a lot of less-than-helpful things as president, but he gave up golf during wartime, believing it to be unseemly. Things are upside-down, backwards, and inside-out in this irrational new world. If there ever existed a sign that the end is near, this is it....

The culmination of America's "Me" Generation was millions of Baby Boomers proving that they are not "racist" by selling their country up the river, voting-in a leader whose intentions were obviously to destroy it under the glittery, shallow guise of "change". Apparently, remaining "forever young" also means "stuck on stupid", since their candidate had clearly stated his sinister desires a priori, to which they stubbornly turned a blind eye. They are still bleating like lost sheep about how they voted for a half-"black" man (you mean all those years of being "colour-blind" were just an empty pose? How sad...), and if you don't support his re-election for whatever legitimate OTHER reasons, YOU are just a racist. How narrow-minded, and how selfish can you get, wishing an oppressive socialist regime (or worse) upon your countrymen, just to assuage your own guilty conscience? If this is your Swan Song as you stumble from a jejune, forty-year pot-hazed stupour into a long period of self-induced clinical dementia, that tune has been played out already on the map of Europe, and it is a mouldy oldie not fit for the most rickety turntable. You used to rail against government authority, and now you just want to usher-in communism so badly that you can taste it. When your president finally succeeds in sucking all the life-blood out of the United States, you won't even be able to taste Humble Pie, because the cost of its ingredients will be astronomically high--in fact, in the Changed America, you can probably say "Bye-Bye" to getting high as well....

You voted for this president because you despised George W. Bush. He is Bush squared and multiplied to the power of infinity (three wars, record-breaking expenditures on nothing but feel-good give-aways, even after he promised to reduce the national debt--and you think he is peachy-keen, just because he has slightly darker skin than you...). And even though the destructive changes and illogical exorbitant expenditures have taken place at blinding speed, you still don't have the open-mindedness to imagine the dire consequences that are looming as you revel in the knowledge that you are not a racist. No brains, no headaches?

The irony is so thick you can cut it with a knife. During the last presidential campaign, America's school children were taught to sing--in tones of Maoist and Hitler Youth--"Obama's gonna lead 'em--gonna give us freedom...", when they ought to have been warbling "Obama's gonna bleed 'em---take away their freedom".

In your zeal to show others how "tolerant" you are (of what, pray tell--a superficial thing like skin-colour?), and your selfish desire to be part of a historical "event", you have chucked your country onto the Ash-Heap of History. Doesn't that satisfy your progressive soul, brother/comrade?

Subject: Dueling Narratives

Vacationing on Martha's Vineyard is, as this newspaper has often pointed out, like entering a special world. Nowhere is this clearer than on the editorial pages of the Gazette. For example, the letters to President Obama last week seem to come from another planet. The writers have presented a narrative that goes like this: wicked Republicans cynically obstruct valiant young president as he seeks to "transform America fundamentally" (by government spending at unprecedented rates). This seems to me a false narrative, relying on a selective choice of facts and accompanied by vitriolic rhetoric. (Not exactly the civility that the President has called for.) Let me suggest an alternative: valiant young Congressmen and Congresswomen, elected specifically to restrain reckless government spending, keep their promises to constituents in spite of enormous pressure from the establishment. Herewith are some facts to support that view:

1. In December 2010, with large Democratic majorities in a "lame-duck" Congress, Senate Majority Leader Reid postponed the decision to increase the national debt ceiling because (paraphrasing his words) he wanted the new GOP House to "share the heat."

2. That same lame-duck Congress could have allowed the Bush tax (rate) cuts to expire, simply by doing nothing about them. Democrats had large majorities and Republicans could not obstruct anything they chose to do. Yet they chose to extend the cuts. President Obama signed the bill. Given his rhetoric before and since, his supporters should ask themselves why.

3. At the same time the President's own debt commission (the Simpson-Bowles Commission) presented its plan to reduce the deficit. The key proposal was to increase revenues by lowering tax rates and closing loopholes. President Obama ignored the Commission's report.

4. In January 2011, the new speaker, John Boehner, laid down two GOP conditions for a deal on the debt ceiling: (1) spending cuts to match the increase in the ceiling and (2) no increase in tax rates (which is not the same as no increase in revenues). This is just what they got in the end, so President Obama could have had that deal at any time.

5. In February, Obama presented his budget for 2012. It projected a record deficit and something like $10 trillion in new debt over 10 years. To say that it ignored the problem of reckless government spending would be a gross understatement. In April, it was rejected 97-0 by the Democratically-controlled Senate.

6. Meanwhile, the GOP-controlled House passed its own budget (the "Ryan budget") which would have reformed Medicare and balanced the budget (slowly over 10 years). The Senate also defeated this proposal, but at least it got 40 votes.

7. To this date, the Senate has not passed a budget in over two years (although required by law). Rather than engage the GOP directly on the issues, Democrats launched their "Mediscare" attack.

8. Obama did invite GOP Congressmen to a budget meeting in April, where he proceeded to personally insult Rep. Ryan on national TV. Liberal critics hailed him as "tough."

9. In July, facing the debt ceiling deadline, the Republican House passed "Cut, Cap, and Balance" , which also would have led to a balanced Federal budget. Instead of debating the proposal, offering amendments, and modifying it as necessary (in other words, instead of doing their jobs), Senate Democrats tabled the bill.

10. In late August, VP Biden negotiated a "grand bargain" on the debt ceiling with Speaker Boehner and the GOP (including $800 billion in increased revenues). President Obama reneged on the deal, insisting on the same tax rate hikes he could not get through a Democratic Congress in December 2010. This was when Boehner withdrew.

11. It is true that the GOP held to their principle of no tax rate hikes (the basis for their election in 2010). This caused critics to accuse them of "blackmail" and "holding hostages." But Democrats had their own hostages. Reid and Pelosi insisted entitlements were "off the table," which limited the scope of any deal, and President Obama insisted that any deal go past November of 2012. Worried about his re-election prospects, he threatened to veto any measure that did not satisfy this condition. The difference is that the Republicans, Congressional Democrats, and even VP Biden respected the conditions of the other side, whereas President Obama did not. He proceeded to wreck the deal and blame the Republicans.

12. As a result, Congressional leaders worked out a deal without much help from the President. He scrambled to get back in front of the parade by giving speeches, mostly in a hectoring, petulant tone. Liberal critics hailed him as "tough."

13. Liberal critics are lambasting the debt ceiling deal as a "debacle." To me this means the conservatives must have won. The GOP held fast to its principle of no tax rate hikes and, if the spending cuts prove to be less than hoped for (they always do), at least they have shifted the argument.

14. There was never any question of default on debts, although partial government shut-down was a possibility. It was Treasury Secretary Geithner who threatened default, JCS Chairman Mullins who warned troops overseas that they might not get paid, and President Obama himself who said he couldn't guarantee Social Security recipients would get their checks. No GOP leader said any such thing.

Conclusions:

1. In the end, the system worked as it was designed by our founders: The legislature reined in an over-reaching executive. It may be messy, but that's democracy.

2. The brief history tells a story of repeated Republican attempts to address the problem in the face of Democratic intransigence, rather than the other way around. The latter had hoped to bluff the GOP into backing down, as they always had before.

3. If either of the GOP initiatives (the Ryan budget or Cut,Cap, and Balance) had become law, the S&P downgrade would likely not have occurred (according to S&P). I disagree with S&P's judgment on the downgrade, but it is a well-deserved rebuke to President Obama. Poetic justice, I'd say....

4. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that Democrats even understand what the problem is (i.e., the debt spiral).

5. I think President Obama missed a big opportunity when he ignored the report of the Simpson-Bowles Commission. Had he put a deal together based on their report, the Republicans would have had to go along. In all probability, he would have ensured his re-election.

6. To negotiate a compromise one must at least recognize the point of view of the opposing side. And it's hard to deal productively with political opponents when you continually accuse them of acting in bad faith (putting "party above country" is the latest, oft-repeated charge).

7. One thing the President's supporters do not seem to get: He is "the Man." Like a ship's captain, he is responsible for everything. It is the leader's job to bring the parties together and work out a deal. Reagan did so, Clinton did so, both Bushes did so. President Obama has not.

And, since when is it a "liberal" thing to enforce supporting giant corporations--insurance companies-- who exploit people's illnesses? Automotive insurance for one's own car is not mandatory. My twenty-year old car is not covered, but has the required liability insurance in case it hits something. Anyone who believes that "insuring" one's health constitutes "health-care" needs a check-up from the neck up. Read my piece to better understand why medical treatment costs are now so exorbitant.

Besides being unconstitutional, forcing anyone to buy "health insurance" is not a health-care program.
In fact, many cultures and religions, including Islam, consider it to be gambling. Yes, gambling in which one bets against himself. That is pretty sick, isn't it?

U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, urged a full investigation be conducted into reports that President Barack Obama’s Administration had granted Sony Pictures and Oscar-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow high-level access for a film on the mission in which U.S. Special Operations Forces killed Osama bin Laden.
The film is reportedly scheduled to be released in October 2012, just a month before the November 2012 elections, a definite boost for Obama's re-election hopes.
In a letter to Defense Department Inspector General Gordon Heddell and CIA Inspector General David Buckley, King wrote that the “Administration’s first duty in declassifying material is to provide full reporting to Congress and the American people, in an effort to build public trust through transparency of government. In contrast, this alleged collaboration belies a desire of transparency in favor of a cinematographic view of history.”
Ms. Bigelow won the Academy Award for best motion picture director for the Iraq war adventure "The Hurt Locker," a film that won high-praise.
She was just about finished with her latest project, a film about the Afghan war, when news came out regarding SEAL Team 6's killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. This presented Bigelow with a problem for her film's ending. She then decided to re-shoot scenes for her film.
"Only in a Hollywood movie will you see a failed president whose claim to fame is being a community organizer, being portrayed as a hero Commander-in-Chief," said former Marine intelligence officer and police detective Mike Snopes.
According to political strategist Donald Peltier, had President George W. Bush helped a filmmaker with classified material, he would have been skewered by the media and his opponents.
In his letter to Gordon S. Heddell, Inspector General of the Department of Defense, and David Buckley
Inspector General of the Central Intelligence Agency, Rep. King pointed out that:
Special Operations Command’s Admiral Eric Olson stated that the May 1st raid “was successful because nobody talked about it before, and if we want to preserve this capability nobody better talk about it after,” and that his operators’ “15 minutes of fame lasted about 14 minutes too long. They want to get back in the shadows.” Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen stated that “It is time to stop talking,” as “We have gotten to a point where we are close to jeopardizing the precision capability that we have, and we can’t afford to do that. This fight isn’t over.”
Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates stated that “Too many people in too many places are talking too much about this operation, and when so much detail is available it makes that both more difficult and riskier” for such missions in the future.
Leaks of classified information regarding the bin Laden raid have already resulted, according to a June 15, 2011 article in the Washington Post, in the arrests of Pakistanis who were believed by local authorities to have assisted the CIA with the May 1st raid.
Further participation by JSOC and the Agency in making a film about the raid is bound to increase such leaks, and undermine these organizations’ hard-won reputations as “quiet professionals” − reputations important for their continued operational success. And, the success of these organizations is vital to our continued homeland security.
Then King spelled out what information was needed for a Congressional investigation:
• What consultations, if any, occurred between members of the Executive Office of the President, and Department of Defense and/or CIA officials, regarding the advisability of providing Hollywood executives with access to covert military operators and clandestine CIA officers to discuss the [Osama] raid?
• Will a copy of this film be submitted to the military and CIA for pre-publication review, to determine if special operations tactics, techniques and procedures, or Agency intelligence sources and methods, would be revealed by its release?
• How was the attendance of filmmakers at a meeting with special operators and Agency officers at CIA Headquarters balanced against those officers’ duties to maintain their covers? How will cover concerns be addressed going forward?
• What steps did the Administration take to ensure that no special operations tactics, techniques, and procedures were compromised during those meetings?
• To the extent possible to determine, how many human intelligence sources and how many Agency intelligence methods have been compromised due to leaks about the May 1st raid? What effects have these compromises had on the CIA’s collection capabilities? Will Agency participation in a film about the bin Laden raid add to or exacerbate the effects of these compromises?

Here's a quick look into the three former Fannie Mae executives who brought down the housing market and Wall Street:

Franklin Raines was a Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae when auditing discovered severe irregularities in Fannie Mae's accounting activities. At the time of his departure The Wall Street Journal noted, Raines, who long defended the company's accounting despite mounting evidence that it wasn't proper, issued a statement late Tuesday conceding that "mistakes were made" and saying he would assume responsibility as he had earlier promised. News reports indicate the company was under growing pressure from regulators to shake up its management in the wake of findings that the company's books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for four years."  Fannie Mae had to reduce its surplus by $9 billion.

Raines left with a "golden parachute" valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear.http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/ . The Government noted, "The 101 charges reveal how the individuals improperly manipulated earnings to maximize their bonuses, while knowingly neglecting accounting systems and internal controls, misapplying over twenty accounting principles and misleading the regulator and the public. The Notice explains how they submitted six years of misleading and inaccurate accounting statements and inaccurate capital reports that enabled them to grow Fannie Mae in an unsafe and unsound manner."  These charges were made in 2006. The Court ordered Raines to return $50 Million Dollars he received in bonuses based on the miss-stated Fannie Mae profits.

Net windfall . . . $190 million!

Tim Howard - Was the Chief Financial Officer of Fannie Mae. Howard "was a strong internal proponent of using accounting strategies that would ensure a "stable pattern of earnings" at Fannie. In everyday English - he was cooking the books. The Government Investigation determined that, "Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions within Fannie Mae,"

On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., asked the Justice Department to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae executives lied to Congress in October 2004 when they denied manipulating the mortgage-finance giant's income statement to achieve management pay bonuses. Investigations by federal regulators and the company's board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004.

Jim Johnson -  A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO.   A look at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's May 2006 report on mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you'll see some interesting things about Johnson. Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden a substantial amount of Johnson's 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7 million when it fact it was $21 million."   Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae.

Author and songwriter Shel Silverstein died in 1999, but his books, cartoons and huge inventory of songs live on today. Nearly everyone has heard Johnny Cash singing Shel's hilarious ballad, "A Boy Named Sue," Dr Hook singing his bizarre "Sylvia's Mother,", and read Silverstein's most famous children's book, "A Light in the Attic." Reading about Shel today, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had written the extremely popular global classic hit, The Unicorn, performed by the Irish Rovers in the 1960s.

Dogs Kill 9-Year-Old Boy in Australia

Just two days after I posted a recommendation for the film, A Cry in the Dark*, and 8 days after my friend Sandra's 6-month-old grand-nephew was eaten alive by a family dog in Virginia Beach, there isthis tragic story of another child being mauled and eaten by dogs. Canines are NOT people, nor are they cartoon characters. They follow their instincts, and humans would do well to respect the basic "nature of the beast". Domesticated or not, dogs are unpredictable.

I saw A Cry in the Dark when it was released in 1988, at Carnegie Theater in in Manhattan. The film made an indelible impression on me. Here is a brief synopsis by Marshall Fine, from Amazon.com:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Elaine on Seinfeld once offered a non sequitur at a party just to relieve her own boredom: "The dingo ate your baby," she blurted in a bad Australian accent. It was a reference to this harrowing film by director Fred Schepisi, based on a true story. Meryl Streep and Sam Neill play a married couple on a camping trip whose baby disappears. Streep maintains that the baby was carried off by a dingo--a wild dog--but she winds up as the victim of a hard-hearted prosecutor and the target of a nationwide hate campaign, in part because she was a religious fundamentalist who seemed unsympathetic and, thus, became an easy target for the tabloid press. Streep and Neill are both outstanding in this fierce, realistic drama about the ways faith can bolster even in the face of outrageous persecution. --Marshall Fine

I thought of the movie two weeks ago, and we bought it for our home film collection. Then two things happened last week that prompted me to mention A Cry in the Dark on Elegant Survivalist: the not-guilty verdict in Casey Anthony's child-murder trial and the intense public attention to the entire matter; and, the fatal mauling of our good friend Sandra's great-nephew Salvador by a dog last weekend. The Anthony story caused non-stop public outrage, while the death of a six-month-old baby at the teeth and claws of a dog has been completely ignored by the press. Irony and hypocrisy abound more than ever in the new world order, but not much has changed since the heart-wrenching true story of A Cry in the Dark.

Two patients are carriers of bacteria of the same strain as that which prevailed in Germany.
Germinated seeds are the source of the poisoning bacteria E. coli that hit a dozen people in Bordeaux, announced Friday the Regional Health Agency (LRA) of Aquitaine. Five of them are still hospitalized.
According to the prefecture, seven out of ten people affected by the poisoning took part on June 8 at a fair in Bordeaux, in a recreation center, where at least six of them have eaten sprouts, which were sprinkled on soups . These seeds, purchased from Jardiland, were germinated by the hosts of the fair.
"The first bacteriological tests have also identified two patients for the presence of an infection with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strain O104 strain found in the context of the outbreak in Germany," said the prefecture.
Among the patients admitted to University Hospital Pellegrin in Bordeaux, there are three women, aged from 41 to 65 years, one of which is still in ICU.They suffer from a deterioration of renal function.
Two patients, a 35 year old man and a woman, 47, are themselves hospitalized Friday gastroenterology at the hospital for investigation of armed Picqué Robert. "The patients admitted to the military hospital is evolving very positively, their condition is steadily improving," said Patrick Gergoy, the medical chief of that institution. "These people do not have impaired renal function, minimal or impairment, then that's what makes the severity of this syndrome," he further said.The prefecture and the LRA had on Thursday rejected a link with cases of E. coli poisoning linked to frozen hamburgers a few days ago that occurred in northern France.

Economical Cooking: Swedish Meatballs

An elegant way to stretch your meat budget in these austere times is to make Swedish or Scandinavian-style meatballs. Each household cook has his or her recipe, but the basics are ground meat such as beef, veal and/or pork mixed with bread crumbs or bits of bread (I use bits of brioche pulled out from my brioche hamburger buns, which have been reserved in a freezer-bag), an egg and some cream or milk. Finely-minced onion is optional. Spices include nutmeg and/or allspice, salt and optional white pepper. Onion powder can take the place of minced onion, or that flavour may be omitted altogether. Meat mixtures are shaped into small balls and rolled in flour, then fried in butter. A pan-gravy is made while the finished meatballs rest in a warm oven until serving time. I prefer to use ground beef, brioche bits, sour cream, minced onions or onion-powder, nutmeg, salt and white or green ground pepper.

Serve Swedish meatballs with new potatoes and perhaps a little lingonberry or cranberry sauce on the side.
This Danish baking-dish has the traditional cream gravy at its bottom, topped with the meatballs (this type of meatball recipe is found in Swedish, Danish and Finnish cookbooks).
Very small new potatoes are usually just boiled in salted water, and not cut into pieces.
These Yukon Gold new potatoes have been cut and boiled, then sautéed in butter and smashed lightly.

There is a direct correlation between the administration's prevention of American and British companies offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, and the high prices that Americans are now forced to pay for oil and gasoline. However, dictators and unfriendly regimes are ALLOWED to drill for oil in the Gulf. Nice. (That is one of the promised changes that no one thought about in their blind zeal to elect someone of "color." It's too bad there weren't high-quality people with full black American heritage running at the time. Like Herman Cain, a man of successful business experience and integrity. But, there is still hope...). We were told later on during the campaign of 2008 by the present incumbent that he was bent on ruining energy companies and making Americans pay exorbitant prices for gas and other forms of energy. Some of us listened. Changing his mind and spinning like a girouette, perhaps he could qualify as an alternative source of energy himself. We just wonder what is powering the man, since much of America's greatness has been torn asunder. It now seems to be an ill wind, as more and more illogical spending and senseless wars are proposed and perpetrated. And I was, to paraphrase John Kerry, "for him before we were against him"--as soon as he tipped his hand and his character and motives were revealed, having first given him a chance, I was dissuaded from supporting this thinly-veiled chameleon. And the uncivil divisiveness of his campaign in the summer of 2008 was very revealing, a portent of things to come.

Wake up and smell the coffee, America. I created the phrase, "bloated Barackracy" two years ago, as the new incumbent began expanding his unilaterally-appointed coven of czars and czarinas who were accountable to no one but him. Your future was sold for votes (the "stimulus plan" amounted to trillions in give-aways to unions and left-wing special-interest groups that did nothing to create an economic boost). The bigger-than-ever federal government is the only jobs-program that has been hiring (those millions of government employees are regarded as automatic votes for his re-election); your "leader" is spending hundreds of millions on vanity-trips to foreign countries (while chastising you for spending too much), and though he promised to cut the national debt in half, he has more than doubled it in proportions never before seen by any previous president. Give him more time, he asks--to finish his mission, which is becoming clearer by the day....

Paul Gallico was a 1919 graduate of Columbia University who first became famous as a sports columnist and editor at The New York Daily News. He interviewed and sparred with Jack Dempsey, later founding the Golden Gloves amateur boxing competition. In his illustrious career as a sports-writer, Mr. Gallico caught Dizzy Dean's fast-ball, and golfed with Bobby Jones. He wrote the book that became a famous bio-pic of Lou Gehrig.

In the 1930s, Paul Gallico began writing fiction. Among his more notable works were The Three Lives of Thomasina, The Silent Miaow, Mrs 'Arris Goes to Paris, The Love of Seven Dolls (this Gallico book became the movie, "Lili" with Leslie Caron, Mel Ferrer and Jean-Pierre Aumont), The Poseidon Adventure, The Cat Who Thought She Was God, The Honorable Cat and The Snow Goose.
